Participles & Gerunds | use of participles & gerunds
As said in the previous
lecture, each and every verb has three forms in general but sometimes, we add
“ing” with a verb for two basic purposes.
1. To make this
word (verb) a participle.
2.
To make this word (verb) a gerund.
What are these for? Let’s have details.
Pareticiples
When we add “ing” with a verb to make or clear the concept of continuous
tense, this verb with “ing” is known as a participle. As:
She is swimming.
He is writing a letter.
They are going to Lahore.
She was weeping bitterly.
Gerunds
When we add “ing” with a verb to make it a noun or an adjective, this
verb with “ing” will be known as a gerund. As:
Swimming is good exercise.
His hand writing is very neat and clean.
Their going surprised us.
Her weeping is weeping me as well.
